Richard Freestone’s new body of work, titled Populaire, appropriates the themes and aesthetic values of popular culture. Here whimsical, character driven narratives unfold within elaborate borders and upon plywood surfaces worked up to a high gloss finish. |
| Freestone draws on a number of influences; from the decorative expression of the art nouveau movement through to modern concepts of cartoon romanticism. The result is an irreverent pop-surreal fantasy. Incorporating multiple layers of imagery from various sources, the works create a conversation between 'low-brow' popular culture, and that which is considered 'high art'. |
Freestone meanwhile seeks to rediscover a passion for the process of painting, involving traditional techniques within a contemporary context.
Richard Freestone completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Whitecliffe College of Art and design in 2006.
