Perrett is interested in the many facets of popular culture. Her subjects range from the essential and unifying character of the London rock 'n' roll scene, to the ubiquitous sub culture of War-Gaming. For her recent War Craft series, Perrett has dipped into the realm of the online role playing phenomenon “World of Warcraft” to explore the altar egos of war gamers who by night become heroes or villains in their own constructed worlds. She's no fan of the game - like Rousseau's jungle paintings, Perrett conjures a place she has never visited. The result is the artist’s imagined version of the gaming enthusiasts’ imagined world. In this exhibition a series of fantastical trophy heads takes shape in the very tactile form of soft fabric sculptures – possibly the antithesis of the virtual online gaming characters they represent.
Perrett explains the motivation behind War Craft:
“I am drawn to the subject partly as a reaction to my previous work 'Playing to the posters on my bedroom wall'. 'Playing…' showed social scenes of urban rock n roll cool - my new work explores the online world of the gaming geek - where social interaction is removed and seen through a digital filter.”
