John Pusateri wrest 5 - 23 November 2008 Preview: Tuesday 4 November 6-8pm |
In wrest, John Pusateri performs as both artist and athlete in a series of large scale drawings. Pusateri suggests the process of drawing as a physical challenge, drawing parallels between artistic and athletic endeavours. |
Having competed as a wrestler in his youth, Pusateri incorporates this knowledge into his art making. Not only does he make reference to the classical tradition of representing athletes in art, but he also plays on the symbolic framework of wrestling itself. The archetypal wrestler is a paradigm for constructed masculinity; in this scenario however, Pusateri’s male subject seems destined to be overwhelmed by his female adversary. Intense in their emotional pitch, these drawings are marked with the artist’s hand in faceted charcoal, a medium and treatment well matched to the sense of turmoil and struggle between the figures.
