Richard Freestone

Richard Freestone appropriates the genres and aesthetic values of popular culture to call attention to perceived hierarchies in the arts. Extracting patterns and designs from machinery, architecture, the figure and popular cultural imagery such as tattoo art and advertising, Freestone has developed a personal lexicon of signs and symbols. He also questions issues of personal ownership of visual material within the broader aesthetic field of popular culture. Incorporating multiple layers of imagery from various sources, the resulting works attempt to create a harmonious conversation between "low-brow art" and "high art.”
