| For Alternative Surface, Rebecca Thomson has employed a number of print techniques, including collagraph, drypoint, stencil and graphite release. She also considers a range of alternative surfaces both to print from and upon with plates comprised of fabrics ranging from transparent netting to thick linen and embroidery fabrics, along with paper, wallpaper, wood and found objects. |

In the main, Thomson pushes the limitations of the collagraph process. Each one-off print has been through the press several times and because Thomson works with multiple plates, each of a very fragile nature, editions are not possible. |
| These quiet, balanced compositions vacillate between representation and abstraction. The occasional recognisable form features to function as an interruption to the picture plane and a compositional device which may set or contradict the scale of the image. For example, the introduction of a pin into in the suite of small prints indicates scale and initiates a shift between the flat picture plane and a shallow illusory space. Sepia tones give the pieces a ghostly, photogram-like quality. |
| Within this body of work is also a comment on the human propensity to collect and keep seemingly insignificant things. Alternative Surface presents us with a family of prints, each one part of a collection of strange relics kept for some unspecified purpose. |
