John Pusateri
rest 21 October - 1 November 2009
Preview: Tuesday 20 November 6-8pm

In a pleasing play on words, John Pusateri’s rest counterpoints his 2008 exhibition, wrest. In rest, as in wrest, John Pusateri is both artist and subject. This time a series of sensitive lithographic prints see him and a woman engaged in various dance-like positions.

While Pusateri’s previous works conveyed a sense of struggle or tension between man and woman, this female counterpart plays a different kind of opposite. She lies or sits in states of repose, her weight supported by the male. Each pose is carefully choreographed to simultaneously convey a sense of lightness and weight, of relaxation and stress, of levity and gravity. Above all, there is a sense of playfulness and freedom in these works, and while the subject matter is pared back and personal, their universally human quality gives them no need for outside referents.

In 2008, Pusateri opened Auckland Print Studio, a professional lithography studio which is involved in projects with professional artists, architects and other design-based practitioners. He was recently awarded the prestigious 2010 Black Church Print Studio Residency in Ireland and is a finalist in the 2009 Waiheke Art Award. Pusateri currently lives and works in Auckland.
