Marisia Dudek

From a young age, Dudek has been inspired to paint by time spent outdoors. Raised on the Hibiscus Coast north of Auckland she enjoyed a childhood of summers at the beach, while winters were spent counting down the days until the snow season started. Dudek still lives on the Hibiscus coast where she continues to make art.
Growing up in a semi rural area surrounded by large tracts of land and water, Dudek has a strong sense of environment. Her paintings reflect a  mock-sentimental and nostalgic engagement with the landscape and her past. Titles are appropriated from classical novels, generating fanciful, escapist associations. These qualities are echoed in the content of the paintings, derived not only from her surroundings but also from fashion magazines, cell biology books, and the covers of romance novels. Boundaries of high and low culture collide as Dudek reinterprets and re-presents her fantasies of the land and forest; her contrived landscapes.
