Janna
van Hasselt

Since completing a conjoint BFA/BSc degree at the University of Canterbury in 2004, Janna van Hasselt has been awarded numerous opportunities abroad, including a scholarship to study at the Rhode Island School of Art and Design, an internship at the Edinburgh Printmakers Studio, an internship at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania, USA, and two artist residencies at Frans Masereel Centrum for printmaking in Kasterlee, Belgium.
Van Hasselt has a passion for rich colour and texture. She uses a
combination of brush-strokes, blind-contour drawing and linear work to alternately reveal or conceal the inner structure of her prints. She is constantly pushing traditional boundaries of lithography and silkscreen by printing on unusual materials such as polycarbonate, wallpaper and domestic fabrics. Her scientific background drives her desire to understand the structure of forms and objects, but she can still appreciate them with a purely aesthetic eye.
