Billow Jar by Janna van Hasselt
Medium: glazed ceramic
Size: 90 x 70 x 100mm
Wanting to add physicality to her creative process, van Hasselt tried punching and kicking pieces of clay; deliberately leaving finger, knuckle, toe and heel marks. She found it liberating to let the energy of this process rule the resulting forms. In direct contrast to their somewhat ‘formless’ structures, the pitted surfaces of these works are carefully outlined with glaze and ‘glammed-up’ with colour. The resulting works share qualities similar to bubbling geothermal pools infused with an underlying sense of aggression.
