Alice Alva, Fortune Lures
Alice Alva is a multidisciplinary visual artist who works across textiles, painting and design. She has a keen interest in craft-based practices and the emotional connections that we develop with textile objects. She currently lives and works in Kirikiriroa, Hamilton. Alva’s work can be found in private and public collections including those of the Waikato Museum and The Arts House Trust.
Fortune Lures is a series of ten coloured beaded talismans designed to bring their keeper good fortune specific to the chosen colour. The series was inspired by Alva's childhood, when her dad Mick would have her design game fishing lures using beads and sequins in their quest for 'landing the big one'. The colour-coded fortunes are: Yellow for sunshine; Blue for rain; Gold for material goods; Red for passion; Pink for love; Green for a bountiful garden; Purple for creativity; Black for sleep; White for clarity; and Orange for friendship.
