Annie Sandano, Golden Wings
Annie Sandano works across a variety of fine art mediums, adapting traditional fine art practices to a contemporary context. Following her highly coveted collection of limited edition wood cut prints, Sandano has recently embarked on a series of colourful geometric abstract painted compositions and ceramics. Her new works, created in her London studio, see figurative elements combined with geometric and organic shapes in freeform arrangements with eruptions of colour and texture. She works with what she calls a “virology of colour”: elements overlap, interact, jostle for space and achieve harmony in co-existence. Testing where painting ends and object begins, Sandano's painted elements often creep over the edges of her supports, distorting the lines of their rectilinear forms and edging toward the three-dimensionality of her ceramic pieces. She completed her Golden Wings series for the Point Blank exhibition in the London studio where she is currently based.
Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Annie Sandano has since lived in New Zealand and The USA, and completed a large portion of the study towards her BFA degree abroad. She has spent much of the past three years travelling worldwide, between undertaking print residencies in Melbourne, Spain and London.
