Duncan Pepe Long, remnants

Duncan Pepe Long is an Auckland based artist who creates portraits and figure studies in paint and various print media including woodcut, lithograph and monotype. Long’s Remnant series for the Ahead of the Curve exhibition is a collection of haunting disembodied portraits of a man and a woman (the artist and his partner). His pairings, particularly given their contrasts in expression, suggest a yin yang duality and interconnectedness between the subjects. They also call to mind the Renaissance convention of the double portrait and the tradition of the miniature portrait as an intimate gift of remembrance.

Having spent several years as the Associate Printmaker at Auckland Print Studio Long now teaches at Unitec. Long was a finalist in the Adam Portraiture award in 2016 and 2018.
