Fleur Woods, Thread Fortunes

Fleur Woods is a mixed media artist based in Upper Moutere near Nelson, in an area surrounded by national parks, country gardens and vineyards. Largely self-taught, her process has been developed through experimentation in the studio.

Woods’ unique ‘stitched’ paintings are a celebration of the artist’s connection with the natural world, her love of textiles and her eclectic aesthetic. Stitch acts as both a layer of texture and a form of mark making. The use of stitching in this context also pays homage to the cultural history of the craft. Woods’ Thread Fortunes for the Ahead of the Curve exhibition extrapolate this notion of painting with thread even further: coloured thread is wound at intervals around lengths of cord which are then arranged in an arc of seven bands, reminiscent of a rainbow.
