Helen Bankers, Segments in Dreamland
Auckland-based photographer Helen Bankers has always been attracted to the natural world. Bankers lives with her husband and daughter in Auckland’s Eastern suburbs. Outside of her magazine and commercial projects, she can be found in her home studio studying flora and fauna.
Her floral still life photographs focus on subtle variations of light and texture. Her study of flora has also led to the discovery of some of the historical and symbolic uses of flowers, in particular anemones, cymbidium orchids, hellebores and tulips.
For her Segments in Dreamland series, Bankers has collaged images together using a polaroid transfer technique wherein the emulsion from a Polaroid photographic print is transferred directly on to the wooden substrate. The finished works evoke 18th century floral decoupage and have a painterly, dream-like quality.
