Annie Sandano, DOUBLETHINK

Annie Sandano works across a variety of fine art mediums, adapting traditional fine art practices to a contemporary context. Following her highly coveted collection of limited-edition wood cut prints, Sandano has begun to create colourful geometric abstract painted compositions and ceramics. Her new body of works, which she began in her London studio, see figurative elements combined with geometric and organic shapes in freeform arrangements with eruptions of colour and texture. She works with what she calls a “virology of colour”: elements overlap, interact, jostle for space and achieve harmony in co-existence. Testing where painting ends and object begins, Sandano's painted elements often creep over the edges of her supports, distorting the lines of their rectilinear forms and edging toward the three-dimensionality of her ceramic pieces.

For her playful DOUBLETHINK series, Sandano has combined the plywood templates with templates from past group exhibitions, glazed ceramics, paint skins and painted soft sculpture elements. Originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil, Sandano is currently based in Whitianga.
